Frequently asked questions about being an Orientation Mentor
Why should I be an Orientation Mentor?
If you want to influence the quality of life on campus, and if you want to help new Scholars get a great start in the Schreyer Honors College, then being an Orientation Mentor is the way to do it!
Who is eligible to be an Orientation Mentor?
Any Schreyer Scholar in good academic standing who completes an application by February 15, and is selected by the Orientation Mentor Selection Committee.
Orientation Mentors help with FTCAP and/or SHO TIME. Can I choose to be a mentor for just one of the events, or both events?
You may choose to participate as a mentor for just one or both of the events. The Orientation Mentor application form allows you to specify FTCAP and/or SHO TIME.
What will I be doing as an Orientation Mentor?
All Orientation Mentors will get training in leadership, organizational and communication skills, as well as help in set up and prepare for Orientation events. FTCAP Mentors will help welcome and orient new students to campus in May. SHO TIME Mentors will have a group of assigned Scholars that they will meet with and help to lead through the entire three-day program. After Orientation, SHO TIME Mentors will continue to meet and stay in contact with their groups through the first four weeks of the fall semester.
What skills do I need to be an Orientation Mentor?
Most importantly, you need to want to work with new Scholars in a positive way. You need to be comfortable leading a group, be open to learning new skills as a leader, and be willing to work hard. It’s also important that you understand the importance of Orientation in getting new Scholars off to a good start and the vital role you play in that process.
What do I get out of being an Orientation Mentor?
You will learn leadership and group skills that you’ll be able to use in other aspects of your life. You’ll have the reward of knowing you have made a difference. If the requirements of the course are successfully met, the mentor will receive one academic honors credit. A course syllabus will be available in February.
