Course Development/Enhancement Awards
The Schreyer Honors College Development/Enhancement Awards are designed to support the design, development, and improvement of honors courses that meet honors course requirements for Schreyer Scholars. The Schreyer Honors College seeks short proposals from tenure-line faculty wishing to develop new honors courses or enhance existing non-honors courses to be offered as honors sections. Faculty members at all Penn State campuses where the Schreyer Scholar population is large enough to populate such courses are eligible to compete for the award.
Approximately ten awards of $2,500 each will be funded for the academic year 2008-2009. Awards may be used to enable course development or enhancement, to secure course materials, to support the involvement of special guest speakers, for related travel or research costs, toward student assistance, or in some combination thereof. The award must contribute directly to development and implementation of an approved honors course that will be offered during fall 2008 or spring 2009 courses. Awards may be renewable for up to three years.
Criteria
Proposals must outline work that will support the Schreyer Honors College mission to achieve academic excellence with integrity, to build a global perspective, and to create opportunities for leadership and civic engagement. General information can also be found here: “What is an Honors Course at Penn State University?”
Innovative formats, themes, and approaches are highly encouraged. Past awards have provided students opportunities to visit important geographical, historical, and environmental sites; engaged students in collaborative projects; supplied students with enhanced materials and technology to do projects in a new way, and brought special visitors to campus to enhance the learning experience. Embedded study abroad, service learning experiences, and other such enhancements have commonly been the mechanisms used to inspire deep learning. Preference will be given to proposal including such enhancements; however, these specific enhancements are not formal requirements as long as the connections to the Schreyer Honors College mission are made explicit.
Faculty selected for the awards will be invited to participate as Schreyer Honors College Faculty Associates, which includes faculty round tables with students and other events and activities hosted by the Schreyer Honors College. The faculty selected will also be invited to share their work in the future with other Schreyer Honors College Faculty Associates through an appropriate forum and must provide a written follow-up evaluation.
